Dundee tenant associations have given a thumbs-up to the news that millions of pounds is to be spent on housing in the city.

As reported in the Tele, Dundee City Council’s housing convener John Alexander has revealed the council plans to spend £64 million on 667 new properties throughout Dundee over the next five years.

Stella Carrington, chairwoman of Charleston Tenants Association, said she was delighted.

She said: “The time is definitely right as new local authority housing for Dundee should definitely be a priority with so many Dundee residents on waiting lists.

“There is a desperate need for new housing in Dundee. It’s almost two decades since a decent number of houses were built by the local authority.

“The houses they plan to be build are well overdue. I would suggest they could do with building even more.”

Mrs Carrington said the last time a significant number of new homes was built by the council was in the 1950s.

“At that time there were hundreds and hundreds of council houses built in Dundee but there’s been nothing significant since.

“I hope there will be a mix of housing providing much needed accommodation for everyone, from young families to single people.”

Stella also welcomed the announcement £1.2 million is to be spent on wheelchair accessible housing.

She said a meeting of the tenants’ association would be held on October 27 where she hoped local people would go along to give their views on the council plans, adding:

“We will take that opportunity to quiz councillors over the proposals and put to them any points we wish to make.”

Rena Smith, chairwoman of Dundee Federation of Tenants Associations also welcomed the pledge.

She said: “There is a definite need for more social housing in Dundee in various areas, including Douglas and Mill o’ Mains so I am delighted to see these areas have been included in the council’s proposals.”
