Police have launched an investigation after a woman, who was apparently begging, had a bucket of dirty water thrown over her.

Eyewitnesses claim they saw someone launch the filthy liquid at the woman on the Nethergate next to the cafe and takeaway Aroma Dundee.

Bystanders said the water had been used to clean a dirty floor before it was chucked all over the cross-legged woman.

A man who said he was the manager of Aroma Dundee claimed no one connected to the restaurant was involved.

He said staff had provided CCTV footage of the incident to police for their inquiries.

It is understood that no one has been charged in relation to the incident at this stage.

The manager, who declined to give his name, said: “I can’t comment just now because the police are investigating and I have been asked not to discuss anything.”

On Aroma’s Facebook page, the owner said they “can confirm that it was not an Aroma staff member that threw the water on a homeless person and can also confirm we have involved the police in this matter”.

They added: “My staff offered assistance to the homeless person and asked if we could assist her to dry herself out and gave her a hot drink and hot food.
“I too, condemn this and really feel sorry about this matter.”

One woman who said she saw the water being lobbed at the woman labelled the attack “a very inhumane act”.

On social media she added: “Someone threw water from their mopping on the homeless lady . . . and shouted at her to move elsewhere after pouring water on her. Absolutely disgusting.”

Others said the incident was “unacceptable behaviour” and “absolutely atrocious”.

One beggar told the Tele: “This happened to me in Newcastle as well.

“One time, staff at a shop actually got a hose out and drenched me and I had nowhere to go so I could dry off.

“It’s disgusting we’re treated like this.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman asked for eyewitnesses to get in touch with any information that may help their investigation.

She said: “Police Scotland is making inquiries into the matter and officers are keen to trace the woman involved.

“Anyone with information regarding the incident, that happened on Sunday March 20 at about 7pm, should contact Police Scotland on 101”.
