Tata Steel has said it is uncertain what will happen to its Dundee workforce in the wake of thousands of job cuts across the firm.
The steel manufacturing company has closed down two of its plants in Scotland, with 270 employees losing their positions.
Now a consultation is under way to determine the ripple effects of what has been a massive blow for the Scottish steel industry.
Tata Steel could not confirm what the future of the Dundee depot, on Tom Johnston Road, will be.
A spokesman for the firm said: “What I can be certain of is the distribution depot in Dundee was not mentioned in the statement Tata Steel gave earlier this week.
“There is a consultation phase which may take some time and the future of satellite stations such as Dundee may be affected.
“But, at this moment, there is no definitive answer we can give about Dundee.
“The depot is part of the distribution side of the business serving the steel demand in the east of Scotland in a retail capacity selling to our small-
volume customers.”
Tim Allan, president of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce said maintaining jobs is of high importance.
He said: “In general, employment throughout Scotland is not flowering at the moment and we need to fight to keep the jobs we still have.
“I think it’s also fair to point out that other sectors such as the games, technology and food and drink industries are doing well in Dundee at the moment.
“But we also need to support other industries such as manufacturing in order to retain and improve Dundee and Angus’ employment rate which is already low.”
Dundee has seen its share of job losses recently with local construction firm Muirfield Contracts collapsing, resulting in hundreds of jobs being lost.
Alasdair Dunlop, an organiser for the Contact 8 Business Networking group, said it was good news the jobs were unaffected for now.
He said: “The people employed in the Dundee depot will have breathed a sigh of relief after the news from Tata Steel this week.”
