SCOTTISH Cup fever has swept Dundee as fans from the tangerine half of the city prepare for tomorrow’s semi-final in Glasgow.
Ahead of Dundee United’s clash with Hibs, fans had the chance to get their hands on the iconic trophy as it visited the city’s Overgate shopping centre.
And although the Arabs haven’t had a season to shout about, there was plenty of excitement about their chance to win world association football’s oldest cup.
One of those getting a taste of the atmosphere was a relative of one of United’s most famous sons.
Seven-year-old Jude Miller, from Charleston, has a unique tie to the club in that his great uncle is former defender Jimmy Briggs.
He was most famous for captaining the side in the mid-1960s and leading the team to a famous 2-1 victory against Barcelona in Spain in a Fairs Cup tie in October 1966.
The youngster, a keen Arab, was hopeful of victory tomorrow but was keeping a level head given the side’s current league battle.
Dad James, 30, a factory worker, said: “I will be working tomorrow unfortunately so I won’t be able to watch the game.
“I will be following the score as much as I can though.
“Of course, I am hoping for a win but, after the season we’ve had, I’m not going to be holding out much hope.
“I am sure either way it will be a great day out for the fans heading to Hampden.”
Two United fans planning to make the trip are seven-year-old Jamie Doig and his dad David, who are season ticket-holders at Tannadice.
The pair, from Menzieshill, have managed to catch many of United’s biggest games in recent years. David said: “We were at the final against St Johnstone in 2014 and when we won it in 2010.”
But it’s not just Tangerines who are catching a bit of cup fever.
Cameron Archibald, 12, from Broughty Ferry, is a diehard Dundee fan and has a season ticket at Dens Park.
However, he is remaining diplomatic.
He told the Tele: “It would be good for the city if United win. Also my best friend supports them.
“I’m also hoping they don’t get relegated as I love the derbies and they are great for both clubs’ revenue.”
