Fire crews were called to a flat in Menzieshill after a bin recess caught fire.
Black smoke bellowed up the side of a block of flats as three crews attended the scene on Charleston Drive just after 12pm.
Fire fighters in breathing apparatus used a hose-reel jet to extinguish the blaze while other fire fighters asked residents in the nearby block of flats to stay in doors.
Police and the ambulance service were also made aware.
Paramedics were called to the scene, though no one required hospital treatment. One person was treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene
Steve Taylor, 31, whose flat was right next to the fire, said he was evacuated from the building just before firefighters blasted the flames with water.
He said: “I was in the kitchen when I saw someone out just below the window.
“The guy was pointing at the fire and when I looked down I could see the flames bellowing out.
“I then saw the flames coming from the bin recess which was well lit.
“I got out the flat as soon as I saw the fire, then the fire fighters arrived.
“There were police cars and ambulances outside the flat as well.
“There’s a bit of water damage to my flat – water from the hose flowed into my flat and has soaked the carpet at the front door.
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “We were called to Charleston Drive after a fire in a bin recess.
“It seems to have started because of careless disposal.”
Fire crews left the scene at 12.55pm.
