The mum of a Carnoustie boy with a rare genetic condition has opened a shop to raise funds to make essential alterations to her home.

Blake McMillan, four, was born with MECP2 Duplication Syndrome — an extremely rare genetic condition that means he has trouble moving and speaking.

Now Blake’s mum Jenny McMillan, 39, has opened a pop up shop in Carnoustie with aim of raising money to fund alterations to their home in a bid to boost Blake’s quality of life.

She said: “We opened a pop up shop a while back and it went so well that we thought it was the best way of raising funds.

“The aim is to raise enough money so we can carry out renovations on our home.

“We are going to make the house open plan so he gets stimulation from seeing everything around him and what is going on around the house.

“It will also make it much easier for me to keep an eye on him.

“Blake can take a seizure at any time and, although I have a monitor to watch him on when I am in another room, he doesn’t make any noise, so this will make things much easier.

“He will have more interaction with the family and not be stuck in the living room all the time. It is all about giving him the stimulation he is missing out on just now.”

Jenny said the support she has received so far from the community has been “amazing”.

She added: “We have had so much support from people in the area and in Dundee and Arbroath.

“We wouldn’t have been able to get this far without everyone’s help.”

The High Street shop will stock products including adult and children’s clothes, toys, books and baby items, maternity clothes, books and DVDs, jewellery, candles and various bric-a-brac items.
