A MAN is to stand trial accused of a murder in a Dundee block of flats.

Adis Minakovskis is alleged to have fatally assaulted Aigars Upenieks just two days before Christmas last year.

The 24-year-old is said to have carried out the attack in the city’s Menzieshill area.

He appeared at the High Court in Glasgow where the case was committed for trial.

The accused will appear again this summer for trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Court papers allege that Minakovskis attacked his victim in the city’s Thurso Crescent.

Prosecutors allege that Minakovskis argued and struggled with Mr Upenieks.

It is then claimed Mr Upenieks was struck with a knife.

Minakovskis is then alleged to have chased Mr Upenieks into a close and repeatedly hit him again with the blade.

Minakovskis has been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance.

Police launched a major investigation following reports of a disturbance at the block last December.

A man was found injured in the common close at about 3am on December 23 and was taken to Ninewells Hospital by ambulance.

Officers confirmed that he later died as a result of his injuries.

Residents spoke of seeing “police on every landing” following the incident. One resident described the police activity as “crazy”.

Another local told the Tele that a police van and a command unit were stationed outside the close and that the building had been cordoned off.

He added: “There was police tape the whole way around the building and there were CID officers in the close.”

A significant police presence remained in the area for days after the alleged murder had taken place.

Forensics officers were also brought in to comb the scene for clues.

One other local told the Tele: “I didn’t expect to wake up to this kind of thing two days before Christmas.”
