IT’S hoped that Dundee will be looking a whole lot more bonnie in the coming weeks — as a series of events take place aimed at brightening up the city.

From Saturday until May 22, community groups will get involved in the council’s Take Pride in Your City campaign, which is backed by the Tele.

First up is a spring clean on Saturday by Friends of Barnhill Rock Garden.

And following this, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association Dundee will clean up the Law.

The Bonnie Dundee group is holding several events throughout the campaign, beginning with a tidy-up of its Union Street planters on Tuesday.

Chairman Graham Cross said: “It is the start of the year for us so we have started down at Dundee Science Centre already and will be taking part in the refurbishment at the back of the Overgate, and planting in Westport.

“We are hoping these events will get more people involved as we really need a few more members.”

Treasurer Catherine Lawson added: “If people take pride in the tubs that we plant and get down with their trowels then they can do it on their own at any time. The #TakePrideDundee campaign has been a great success with substantial contributions from community groups, nurseries and schools, religious groups and local residents.

“The campaign has always been community based and aims to encourage people to take ownership of their community’s green spaces and to contribute to their upkeep and improvement.

“We are approached on a weekly basis by groups and individuals looking to support the campaign by organising litter-picks or planting flower beds, or even suggesting ways to improve green spaces.

“Dundee has more green space per head than any other city and it’s incredibly important that we all take part. Over the coming months, a varied and extensive programme will continue to be developed across Dundee.”

Councillor John Alexander, convener of neighbourhood services, said: “The Take Pride campaign is all about local people identifying what areas they want to work with us to address.

“In some areas, such as the West End, graffiti has been identified as an issue and we’re actively looking at projects to reduce this and improve the general environment.”
