Work is under way to install huge steel beams at Dundee station as its redevelopment continues.

In total, 46 of the support beams will arrive in the city with the work being carried out overnight to minimise disruption on the railways.

Each support weighs up to 15 tonnes and will hold the station concourse and new buildings which will sit over the main east coast rail line.

In total more than 500 tonnes of steel is being lifted into place by a giant mobile crane that picks the beams up in pairs to ensure stability.

Two lorries, carrying the girders at least 30 metres long, were among the vehicles making the special deliveries earlier in the week.

Their arrival caused quite a stir as the extra-long lorries navigated through the city centre.

Jimmy Strathearn, 40, an administrator for Police Scotland, said: “I was at work on Tuesday and I looked out the window and saw them.

“There were two smaller trucks beforehand and then the bigger one came — it caused a fair bit of traffic chaos.

“I thought it was funny so I took a picture.

“It provided a welcome distraction for my colleagues.”

Will Dawson convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Anyone who has taken a train to or from the station in the past few weeks is bound to have seen for themselves the great progress being made on the new concourse and its associated hotel development.

“Within the past few weeks our contractors Balfour Beatty have been cracking on with the foundations for the development, completing substantial piling works in April.

“Recent good weather has been critical in keeping us on programme so that we can install the beams to the timetable agreed with Network Rail that lets work over the tracks take place during the night.”

The station is still on track for completion in early 2018.
