Infrared sensors are set to be introduced at the Tay Road Bridge amid concerns drivers are breaking the speed limit.

The equipment will be used on a short-term basis to establish the scale of the speeding problem.

The move comes after Newport and Wormit Community Council raised a number concerns about speeding motorists and of high-sided vehicles crossing the bridge when there are strong winds.

Kate Legg, secretary of the community council, said: “People in the community told us they felt traffic was crossing the bridge at speeds higher than 50mph.

“The bridge manager thought the number of accidents caused by speeding was minimal but still agreed to look into it. We are pleased with his response.”

Bridge manager Alan Hutchison said a survey would be carried out using an infrared sensor — fixed to the walkway lighting columns— to gather information on traffic speeds.

He said: “The council has kindly agreed to programme us into their survey schedule. It is anticipated that we will get approximately a week’s data, which will be useful in the first instance.”

A spokesman for Dundee City Council confirmed the local authority is assisting with collecting speed data to be shared with local authorities.

Welcoming the news, North-East Fife Councillor Tim Brett said: “It is clear that while there are relatively few accidents on the bridge, many motorists are exceeding the speed limit.”

Inspector Ray Cuthill, road policing inspector for Tayside Division, said officers include the road bridge as part of their regular patrols.

He added: “Police activity may not be immediately visible to members of the public.

“Officers will usually stop motorists away from the live carriageway at a place where it is safer to do so.

“We would ask all members of the public to heed any safety advice and for motorists to comply with posted speed limits.”
