A Dundee charity opened the doors of its new centre after volunteers spent 1,800 hours getting the building up to scratch.

Stobswell-based charity Boomerang acquired the Kemback Centre as its new hub with six volunteers spending seven weeks renovating the space.

The building, which lay empty for two years, was cleaned out and renovated by a dedicated crew who worked five days a week to ready the place for the lunches, events and activities the charity offers the community.

Neil Ellis, the founder of Boomerang, said he was so thankful to the team of volunteers who helped him save “thousands of pounds” on getting the new space up to scratch.

He said: “The help from the six volunteers has been brilliant — I couldn’t ask for any more from them.

“They came forward and carried out the work free of charge, which has helped me save thousands of pounds on renovation costs.

“All six members of the group combined put in roughly 1,800 hours of hard work.

“Since Boomerang managed to get a hold of this place, a lot of folk rallied round.

“People have helped in any way they can — it has been great.”

Boomerang obtained the former care centre from Dundee City Council through the Community Asset Transfer scheme.

One of the volunteers, Bill Beckers, said he was more than happy to put the work in as the charity offers an “invaluable service” to the people of Dundee.

Getting on with the work along with Bill was his wife, Liz, Hilda Simpson, Lynne Christie, Calum Beattie and Michael Palmer, with staff member Carlyn Connor overseeing the project.

Bill said: “We were all only too happy to do the work as it is for a worthwhile cause.

“The building had been lying empty for two years so there was a lot of dust and grime to clean up.

“The outside walls needed cleaning as well as the whole of the inside of the building — there was a bit of joinery work to do, too.

“For seven weeks we spent five days from about 9.30am to just after 3pm carrying out the work that needed done.

“It’s been very worthwhile — Boomerang offers a invaluable service and the new space for all the events they offer is much needed.”
