Lochee High Street in Dundee is set to face major disruption as road teams carry out patching work.
Shoppers and business owners alike will suffer delays — and there are fears that retailers will lose money — while the work takes place from August 29 for a total of four weeks.
Paul Smith, chairman of Lochee Traders’ Association, said that the work would have an impact on businesses in the area.
He added: “If they close the road, it will affect all the shops because people don’t walk that extra few yards nowadays.
“The cassies are needing work — they are cracking up because they aren’t strong enough for buses and lorries coming through.”
John Grossi, owner of Lochee Laundrette, said that he supported the work, so long as access was maintained.
He said: “As long as we can get our vans in and near the place, then you have to just get on with it.
“If the road is needing done, it is needing done, so we will see what happens.”
Chris Robertson, of Poppins on the High Street, said that he thought work needed to be carried out on the speed bumps in the area. He said: “It needs done but the council should think about it more — it isn’t good news for the High Street.”
Local councillor Tom Ferguson said he had “great sympathy” with the retailers based on the street, who suffered significantly when the High Street was completely transformed in 2014 for redevelopment.
He said: “I hope that the workers will treat the retail section as well as possible.
“I do sympathise with the retailers, as they can’t afford the lost income from this. I would love to know what consultation the council will have done with them, if any.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “These roadworks are part of an ongoing roads maintenance programme taking place across the city.
“A diversion will be in operation and access will be maintained.”
Other roadworks recently announced by the council include 10 days of work on Earn Crescent in Menzieshill on August 22 for sewer repairs. Access to the street will be maintained.
Upper Constitution Street will be closed for resurfacing work on August 29, from Macaulay Street down to Kinghorne Road.
Meanwhile, Logie Street in Lochee is set to be closed southbound for two weeks, starting on August 29.
