Housing plans for old nursery site spark anger

Residents said today they were upset over plans for housing on the site of a former nursery.

Local company McGill Homes has applied to Dundee City Council to build five houses on an area of Cotton Road.

Folk who live on the street told the Tele they plan to object to the proposals.

They are worried the housing will cause the road to be overcrowded and lead to parking issues and possible disturbance in the street.

Margaret Lamb, 69, said the street was very narrow and there was no room for extra cars parking or turning.

She added: “I’m really upset and worried about the proposals.

“These houses will also overlook our house and those of our neighbours.

“They’re going to be big houses, which presumably could bring families to the street. This could lead to added noise and disturbance.”

Her husband, Arthur, 74, said he would be objecting to the planning application and added: “These houses will just bring problems to the street.”

Lesley Hood, 62, who also lives across the road from the site, said she was concerned about the plans.

She added: “There’ll also be real issues during the construction because there’s just no room for big lorries, cranes, etc.”

At a secret session this week, city councillors agreed the site could be sold to a private company for development.

Councillor for the area Jimmy Black has hit out over the matter being heard in private.

He added: “I don’t know why there has to be all this secrecy. I think it was absurd that the matter was held in private, given that this land was part of the community asset transfer programme.

“I was a bit surprised when I heard it had been marketed and a sale price agreed.

“Whatever the reason, the public will only find out the sale price, or buyer of this land, when it’s too late for them to have any say.

“This land was a community asset and could have potentially been used for a community purpose.

“Efforts could have been made to attract voluntary organisations or a group to find some way to use the land.”

McGill Homes was asked for comment but hadn’t responded by the time of going to press.
