Police have launched an investigation after a man was assaulted in broad daylight on a busy Dundee street.

Officers were called to the incident at the top of Albert Street at around 5.30pm on Thursday.

One witness said he saw one man punch the other man, who is believed to run a business in the area.

Kieran Philp, 21, said he was working in the nearby Spar shop when he saw a man being assaulted.

“I saw him walking up the street when he was approached by another man who punched him.

“There was a fairly large group of people around and then the police arrived and the crowd scattered.”

Ramza Mohammed, who owns a nearby newsagent, said he heard that the victim had suffered a facial injury in the ordeal.

“I was told that three other men had been involved in the attack but I didn’t witness it.

“I think the man who was attacked called 999 himself to get help.

“The police weren’t long in arriving.

“There were about three or four police vehicles with quite a lot of police officers who seemed to be searching the area.”

Another woman who works in the area but who didn’t want to be named said it was shocking that the incident had taken place in broad daylight. “There would have been loads of people in this area at that time of day,” she said.

“It’s scary to think an assault like this could take place here at that time, presumably in front of lots of people.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed that an assault had taken place.

She said: “We were notified at 5.30pm following reports of an assault. One male assaulted another. The victim sustained a facial injury, which is not believed to be serious.

“Officers are following a positive line of inquiry.”

Staff in the local chemist shop said they heard a lot of shouting outside just as they were locking up

One woman said: “I looked outside but it was just in time to see what looked like a fight getting broken up. When I was leaving the police began to arrive .”

A man who works at the post office next to where the assault took place said: “This can be a noisy area but there’s not usually too much violence. It’s terrible that something like this has happened in broad daylight.”
