Plans have been revealed to build more than 40 new homes on the site of a former primary school in Dundee.

Cruden Homes and Angus Housing Association have announced the investment of nearly £5 million in the site formerly occupied by Mid Craigie Primary School.

The building, on Pitairlie Road, was knocked down in 2009.

But despite previous interest in the land, it has lain vacant since the school was demolished.

Angus Housing Association has been involved with the regeneration of Mid Craigie for the past 15 years, with nearly 250 homes built in the area.

Director Bruce Forbes said he was “pleased” to see the latest project getting off the ground.

He said: “We have been trying to get the proposal through since 2009.

“It has taken a number of years but as soon as the school was demolished we saw the gap and realised the potential in the site.”

Mr Forbes said the delay in getting things moving was due to a number of changes in obtaining funding for housing.

He added: “The Scottish Government has increased investment in the rented housing market.

“However, recent changes have made the development more viable.

“There has been a lull in the sector but hopefully we will now see the development of more new homes.”

Angus Housing Association will have 30 properties available for rent within the development — five of them having been earmarked for people with special requirements.

The remaining 12 properties will be sold by Cruden Homes.

Mr Forbes added: “Mid Craigie residents can look forward to a derelict eyesore being transformed for a positive use.

“It is pleasing to have had the very positive endorsement of our proposals from the local community.”
