Veteran Lochee councillor Tom Ferguson spoke of his shock at losing a vote to allow him to stand again for the ward next year.
However, in an exclusive interview with the Tele, he said he remained committed to the people of Lochee and is already planning his strategy for the future.
The Labour councillor was deselected by the local party at a stormy meeting last night. He was eliminated in the first round of voting.
Mr Ferguson said: “Yes, it is a shock — I have to admit that. However, I am now taking my time to consider my future. There is a lot to think about.”
Mr Ferguson said his commitment to the ward he has served for 10 years was as strong as ever. He said he would remain in his current position until the elections in May.
He added: “My main concern at the moment is the people of Lochee. I will continue to serve them to the best of my ability right to the last minute.
“I would also like to continue to serve the people of Dundee and Lochee in the future.
“I am working out the future at the moment.
“There is a white board on the wall of my study and I’m planning my strategy.”
Mr Ferguson said he would continue to be a member of the Labour Party.
A Labour source who was at the meeting said that Mr Ferguson “stormed out” after the vote, closely followed by supporters.
Party members opted to support two new candidates to represent Lochee at next year’s poll.
They are Michael Marra, a research strategist at Dundee University, and Charlie Malone, a lecturer at Abertay University.
Another Lochee councillor, Norma McGovern, is not standing again.
Mrs McGovern said that she had decided before last night’s meeting to withdraw from the selection process.
She said: “It was never my intention to put myself forward for reselection.
“I was at the selection meeting to help out with administration only.”
Graeme McKenzie, chairman of Labour’s Lochee branch, said the party wanted to offer its heartfelt thanks to Mr Ferguson and Mrs McGovern for their years of service to the ward.
