Dundee’s war dead will be remembered this Sunday as communities across Scotland honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The city lost more than 4,000 souls during the First World War and more than 1,800 in the Second World War, while further conflicts — from Korea to Iraq — also took their toll.
On Sunday, a ceremony will take place at Powrie Brae at 11am, which will be attended by Depute Provost Christina Roberts and Angus Council’s Depute Provost Alex King.
There will be a parade starting at the High School of Dundee at 10.40am, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance outside the City Churches.
A service will be held at St Mary’s Church and a separate wreath laying will happen at The Law memorial at midday.
A further memorial event will also happen at the submarine memorial in the city’s docks at 2.30pm.
The Frigate Unicorn, on Victoria Dock, will host the Royal Naval Reserve Service at 3pm, to which everyone is welcome.
The Very Rev’d John Chalmers will be the guest preacher at a ceremony considered particularly relevant in the centenary year of the mud-filled horror of the battles of the Somme and Jutland.
Dundee Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: “I am proud to be Lord Provost of a city that always remembers those who have died in conflict.
“They cannot be forgotten. They fought for our freedom and we must remember them.”
The Angus Depute Provost will also attend an Arbroath parade, which starts from the Legion Scotland clubrooms on Helen Street at 1.30pm and marches to West Kirk for a gun salute and wreath laying. There will be a cross laying service at 10.45am in the Western Cemetery, Arbroath.
In Forfar, there will be a service at St John’s Episcopal Church at 11am, with a parade then taking place from the RBS car park, on East High Street, at 12.15pm. It will move to The Cross for a service and wreath laying ceremony.
There is also a wreath laying ceremony at Balmashanner War Memorial, Forfar, at 2pm.
A church service of remembrance will also happen at The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity at 10.40am in St Andrews before a parade at 11.45am and a wreath laying service at the War Memorial at noon.
