A developer yesterday announced it plans to appeal a decision by the city council to refuse its proposals for 150 homes.

The housing site in Broughty Ferry — which would have been known as Balgillo Heights — had been recommended for approval by council planning chiefs despite objections.

However, at a meeting on November 21, councillors of the local authority’s development management committee voted to reject the application.

The plans — proposed for site north of Arbroath Road in the Ferry ward — were lodged by Inverurie firm Kirkwood Homes.

Yesterday the company said it was “extremely disappointed” by the decision.

Colin Crombie, managing director of Kirkwood Homes, explained: “Having reviewed the decision — which would have seen more than £45million invested in the city to deliver 150 new much-needed family homes — Kirkwood Homes has decided to appeal the decision to the Scottish Government.”

Mr Crombie explained: “I’m extremely disappointed that I have had to take the decision to appeal the application.

“Over the last two years we have sought to work closely with Dundee City Council to ensure that the proposals not only reflected their aspirations for the site but importantly delivered choice for all those wishing to move to the east of the city.

“We already had more than 400 inquires for homes in the development prior to the council’s refusal and that clearly shows that there is a real and urgent need to build homes at Balgillo Heights.”
