Women as young as 17 in Tayside have asked police to disclose if their partner has a history of abusive offences since the launch of a new scheme last month.

The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme — otherwise known as Clare’s Law — was launched on October 1 around Scotland.

The initiative is named after 36-year-old Clare Wood, who was murdered by her violent ex-boyfriend George Appleton in 2009.

She was unaware of his history of violence against women.

Now, everyone in Scotland has the right to ask police for any abusive history in the past of their partner or potential partner.

Figures obtained by the Tele show in the first five weeks of the launch, 13 people in Tayside have requested information.

Three were from Dundee, four in Angus, five in Perthshire and one in Kinross.

Police revealed that all 13 were women and their ages ranged from 17 to 49.

Earlier this year, Menzieshill woman Joanna Harrison told the Tele how she was a victim of domestic abuse from her former partner Reece Smith.

He came home after being out drinking and went on to pull Joanna by her hair before punching and kicking her in the face.

Joanna, 20, said she would use Clare’s Law in the future if she ever felt it necessary.

The mum-of-one said: “I have heard about it more recently but not at the time of what happened to me.

“It is something people should be doing if they have any concerns and it’s good it is being used.

“I think it will help people who have been through domestic abuse before.”

Clare’s Law originally went live across England and Wales in 2014.

Detective Inspector Mark Garrigan said: “Police Scotland, Tayside Division has welcomed the introduction of the Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse Scotland, and the opportunities it provides police and partner agencies working towards protecting people from instances of domestic abuse.

“We’re encouraged by the positive start to the programme and hope members of our local communities who hold concerns around certain individuals will make use of the scheme.”
