Bargains but no bother at Black Friday sales in Dundee

Black Friday in Dundee kicked off with an early start for bargain hunters – but no repeat of the trouble which marred previous events.

Eager shoppers were out as early as 5am looking for deals on big-screen TVs and other big-ticket items.

The clamour was much reduced from last year, however.

One of the biggest queues was at the Kingsway West Retail Park Tescoe, where around 50 people stood outside as the sale began.

The queue was quiet and calm and when the doors opened at 5am they almost sauntered in.

Meanwhile, down in the city centre Black Friday was a bit of a damp squib.

At the Overgate Centre, Argos and Superdry were due to open at 6am but  there wasn’t a single person outside waiting to get in.

Along at the Wellgate, the doors were open and there was a welcoming party of about nine security staff and shop assistants waiting to welcome the shoppers – but no one came.

The centre’s duty manager Marion Crerar said she was disappointed but not particularly surprised.

She added: “People can get bargains all year round now. Also Black Friday no longer happens on just the one day.

“I expect it to get busy later and over the weekend.”

Game in the Murraygate fared a bit better, reporting “good sales” throughout the night.

Depute manager James Clark said they were open from 8pm last night until around 3am today.

He added: “I reckon we had about 200 customers. It was busy around midnight when we had some special deals on.”
