Dundee motorists have been making the most of cheaper diesel and petrol, as the prices continue to plummet in the lead up to Christmas.

The cost of diesel has dropped to as low as 106.70 pence per litre in Dundee.

The UK average of 109.89p is the lowest diesel has been since December 2009.

Petrol prices have also tumbled for the fifth consecutive month and now sits at an average of 106p per litre.

The cost of petrol has even dipped to as low as 103.7p per litre.

Drivers in the city have welcomed the price cuts, but fears were raised that they won’t last for long.

David Sherriff, 67, a retired superintendent from Craigie, said: “It’s good news to hear at this time of year and I will save a little money but it won’t be that much.

“I think the problem is that taxes are too high on fuel. It won’t be long before the price goes back up.”

Bob McLeod, 69, a retired line manager from Whitfield, said: “I have had a car for many years and I’ve seen the price just keep rising.

“It chops and changes, occasionally dropping, but it never drops far for long before it then goes up. And it never comes down to what it should be. It is nice for it to drop at this time of year, though.”

Lelaine McCabe, 62, a receptionist from Monifieth, said: “It still needs to get a lot lower.”

However, the cost of a full tank of fuel was at a six-year low last month, saving people as much as £8.95.

RAC Fuel Watch spokesman Simon Williams said: “In the expensive run-up to Christmas, drivers of both petrol and diesel vehicles are benefiting from far cheaper fill-ups than they did at this time last year.

“The lower forecourt prices we’re enjoying at the moment are a product of the fall in world crude oil prices, which began in September 2014.

“As it stands we anticipate a very slight average petrol price reduction in the next two weeks and another 2p a litre coming off diesel, taking the new six-year average low price even lower.”

November was a landmark month for the UK fuel market, with both the lowest average pump price for diesel in six years and petrol being sold for under £1 a litre again.
