Forth Road Bridge closure gives Dundee shops boost

Businesses in Dundee say they are reaping the benefits of the Forth Road Bridge closure.

Last week it was announced that the bridge was to be closed until the New Year due to structural deficiencies.

Companies in the capital have announced that they expect to lose tens of thousands of pounds in the run-up to Christmas — but firms in Dundee have seen a sharp increase in economic activity.

Gary Mulholland, vice chairman of DD One, a group that represents local businesses, said that the closure had made a busy time even more hectic for local retailers especially in the city centre.

Mr Mulholland added: “Customers tell us that the city has a lot to offer and the thought of travel uncertainty into Edinburgh is encouraging many to look for their special gifts and entertainment in Dundee.

“Our hotels are experiencing significant demand for festive celebrations, and local specialist shops like Lorraine Law are adding extra advertising locally to remind Tayside of the unique offerings available without the journey south.

“It is very encouraging that the hard work from city centre businesses and Dundee City Council over the recent times has resulted in a city ready to serve and grow.”

Malcolm Angus, manager at the Overgate, said: “With the bridge closure, we experienced a week on week increase of 8.4% in footfall to the centre last weekend.

“Sunday was our busiest day with an increase of 28.9% against the previous week.

“The increased footfall is certainly benefitting our retailers with some reporting year on year sales increases of up to 72%.

Kane Savage, sales manager at Malmaison Dundee, added: “We have noticed increased inquiries and bookings for our party nights and festive lunch bookings as a direct result of the closure.”

Brett Davidge, who manages the city’s Apex Hotel, also said they had seen an increase in party inquiries.

He said: “Last-minute pick-up of rooms is good and we have communicated to all our guests who will be staying with us over the next few weeks, so they have been pre-warned of the closure and impact this may have on their travel plans.”
