Dundee’s biggest bus company has announced a shake-up of its fares for 2016.

Xplore Dundee has revealed how those paying for weekly travel will have to pay more — but most single journeys across the city will be cheaper.

The cost of a short journey — usually consisting of three bus stops — will rise from £1.40 to £1.50 for adults, but anything further for any distance will be capped at £2 instead of £2.30.

Weekly tickets paid for by Discovr Smartcard will go up from £12.50 to £13, while it’ll be £13.50 to pay for it on the bus, compared to £13 currently.

There are changes to kids’ travel too — a new young person’s category will include everyone aged five to 18, with short journeys costing £1 and longer single journeys costing £1.30 — meaning a saving for those who travel further. Kids under five remain free.

The price of an annual pass is currently £495, but that’ll rise to £500 — with a monthly direct debit rising to £43 per month from £41.50.

The cost of a Daysaver, which allows multiple journeys of any distance, all day, will rise from £3.60 to £3.70 — but will be discounted until March 31 to £3.50.

The Family Daysaver ticket, which has already been slashed for Christmas from £7, will remain at £5 well into 2016.

Student weekly tickets will be frozen until the end of the academic year at £9.30 on the Discovr card or £9.80 if purchased on the bus.

Xplore insists that passengers will still be getting value for money after the changes have been implemented. Elsie Turbyne, the firm’s managing director, said: “I am pleased to reveal our fares shake-up for 2016 as I believe many of the changes will be of benefit to a wide range of our customers.

“We are capping single fares at £2, reducing the prices of our Daysavers and extending our young person’s fares to everyone up to the age of 18.

“We have worked hard to keep any increases to a minimum and to ensure that our customers get value for money.

“I am also looking forward to introducing new smart products in 2016; we have plans to add more tickets to our Discovr card, making it even simpler and cheaper to travel by bus in Dundee.”

Xplore recently announced changes to its timetables for the festive period.

There are no services on Christmas or New Year’s Day, while on Boxing Day and January 2, there will be a Sunday service in operation — but some routes will have limited buses.
