A MUM has spoken of the moment her fiancé delivered their baby at the side of the road on a frantic dash to hospital.

Kimberley Dewar, 27, went into labour on Thursday at about 5.30am but decided to wait at home with fiancé, Colin Ogilvie, 35.

There was no sign of the baby being imminent and the couple agreed to travel to the hospital at 9.30am.

But the pair were forced to pull in at the side of the dual carriageway, near the entrance to Kingsway Retail Park, where Colin had to deliver their baby as an ambulance call handler talked him through it.

Stunned Christmas shoppers and staff from nearby shops looked on as the drama unfolded.

Less than half an hour later, baby Alexis came in to the world weighing 7lbs and 2oz.

Mother and baby were taken to Ninewells in an ambulance.

Today, Kimberley and Colin are at home with their new baby and the family are doing well.

Speaking of the moment she realised Alexis was on her way, Kimberley said: “Everything happened so fast, we’re still trying to get our heads round it.

“I can’t believe it really happened. We were driving along and I realised that we weren’t going to make it. We pulled over on the Kingsway and Colin ran round to the passenger side to help me.

“In no time at all, our little girl was born. We’ve called her Alexis Ogilvie-Dewar. She had such an incredible journey into the world we thought she deserved a double barrelled name.”

Kimberley, who also has an eight-year-old son, said: “Alexis is fine and very healthy.

“We felt like rockstars in the hospital — we were the talk of the place for the day. We got home last night. This time it was much quicker than the last time I gave birth and I obviously misjudged it.”

Workers from the nearby Tesco Extra store were among those who went to the couple’s aid.

An onlooker told the Tele: “They pulled over and the guy came out the car saying: ‘Can you help me? Can you help me?’

“He was trying to phone an ambulance and was asking for the woman to help him. Then they delivered the baby. It’s a nice tale of a Christmas baby — everybody was talking about it. It was all very exciting.”
