Mess found at site after Travellers depart

Mounds of rubbish have been dumped at a site formerly occupied by Travellers in Dundee.

Three separate mounds of bin bags, including toys, were found piled next to an abandoned office building in Luna Place at Dundee Technology Park.

Windows on the bottom floor of the Client Logic building were also found smashed — though it’s not clear when they were broken.

West End councillor Fraser Macpherson said rubbish found dumped on private sites was “frustrating” because the council has no power to clear the mess away.

He has since asked for the owners of the property to be notified about the issue.

He said: “There have been a few occasions in the past were rubbish has been dumped at that plot of land.

“However, the council do not have any locus there to have it cleaned up.

“The owners of these properties are usually based overseas and it is difficult to get hold of them when it comes to clearing the rubbish quickly.

“If it is council property, then we can work towards clearing the area up.

“But, with it being private land, the owners are able to make their own arrangements on what is done and when it is done.”

The group of Travellers had occupied the site since the start of December, but departed earlier this week.

Members of the group had previously told the Tele that they planned to stay until early next month — having already spent Christmas and New year at the site.

It was the first Traveller camp to set up in Dundee since caravans left a site on Jack Martin Way several weeks earlier.

Councillors have vowed to hold talks on dealing with the Traveller issue in the coming months.

Mr Macpherson added: “I have notified the relevant departments within the council, asking if they can get in touch with the agents representing the owners with a view on getting the site cleared.”
