There was delight in Dundee following the announcement that Prince William and Kate are to make their first official visit to the city.

The Earl and Countess of Strathearn, as they are known in Scotland, met while studying at nearby St Andrews University.

It has been revealed that the Royal couple are coming to Dundee next Friday.

High on the agenda is the mental wellbeing of young people, with the majority of engagements centred around the issue.

Lord Provost Bob Duncan, who as Lord Lieutenant is the city’s representative to the Queen, said: “I am delighted that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are coming to Dundee. I think it will greatly benefit the city’s young people, especially those who are dedicating time to raising awareness and tackling mental health issues.

“Many young people will have the chance to meet with William and Kate and share their stories and I think it will have a positive and lasting impact on both the city and issues surrounding mental health.”

The couple will take part in an anti-bullying workshop at The Corner in Shore Terrace, focusing on how young people can support each other and challenge stigma around a range of topics.

Funded by the council and NHS Tayside, The Corner offers physical and mental health services for young people.

The Discovery is one of the attractions the Royal couple will tour.

The Royal couple will also hold a private meeting at The Shore with 10 leaders in Scotland’s youth mental health sector, which has been organised by Young Scotland in Mind (YSIM), a forum for voluntary sector organisations which aims to improve mental health of young people in Scotland.

While in Dundee, William and Kate will join a family fun day at Dundee Rep and will meet the cast and crew of In Her Shadows, which explores a young woman’s battle with depression.

During their visit to the Rep, the Duke and Duchess will also meet with young people participating in a workshop called See Me, a group working to end mental health discrimination in Scotland.

The group is using members’ experiences of mental health conditions to lead a change in the way people their age perceive mental health.

Following a tour of the RSS Discovery, the Royals’ day will conclude with a trip to Abertay University, where the Duke — who is president of BAFTA — and Duchess will meet the winners of a UK-wide BAFTA game design competition for 10 to 18-year-olds.

William and Kate will also meet people who have benefitted from initiatives such as the BAFTA Scholarship Programme, which this year includes two postgraduate Computer Games Development students at the university.
