Dundee Refugee Support has been swamped with “hundreds and hundreds” of bags of donations since forming.

Jayne Kelly, one of the group’s co-ordinators, said since starting last month, donations have continued to flow in and is now in dire need of volunteers.

Jayne said there were too many bags to count, adding: “We have received literally thousands of donations since the campaign started last month.

“We have already shipped three huge vans filled within the last few weeks.

“We have four storage units full of boxes ready to go, as well as hundreds and hundreds of bags.

“We really need the physical support as the quicker we get it packaged, the quicker we can ship things and get them where they need to go.

“We are really struggling for volunteers.

“And I would like to call out to any groups or clubs who might want to get involved. We would also like musicians or dance groups who might want to provide entertainment and draw people in, to make a real event of the process.”

Several members of the team are helping refugees in Calais.

Jayne added: “The shipping is going well and we now have a contact in Glasgow who should enable us to start shipping en masse in the next couple of weeks.

“But getting everything sorted and ready to go in the meantime is a big hurdle at the moment. We are also looking for members to join our team of coordinators. This can cover anything from general fundraising and events to haulage and transportation.

“Two of our volunteers are building shelters in Calais this week, while some of the team are holding meetings with councillors and MSPs, so any skills people can bring to the table is useful.”

Several members of Dundee Refugee Support are in Calais this week.

They will be building shelters for migrants at the Jungle Camp and distributing aid from the group’s many donations.

The group is also working on putting together an art exhibition in a month’s time showcasing drawings and paintings relating to the cause, and is also hosting a sponsored five mile run on November 22.

The group will hold their volunteer week from Saturday to October 24 at the DRS headquarters at Swan House, just off Explorer Road.
