Work to demolish one of Dundee’s most historic primary school nursery buildings has got under way.

St Mary’s Roman Catholic Infant School, in Lochee, was formally opened in February 1929 but records of the site’s use date back to the 1850s.

The demolition has stirred fond memories among former pupils.

Among them is Lochee councillor Tom Ferguson, who said: “I still remember turning up at St Mary’s on my first day in my boots and little corduroy suit, and I still remember my first teacher Miss Blair.

“Family upon families went to the school and many still live within the Lochee area.

“I will be keeping a close eye on the site as it means a lot to Lochee and needs to be put to good use.”

The Tele also spoke to several residents about their memories of the school.

Barmaid Marnie May, 43, said: “My kids went there and it was a good school, they loved the teachers, and it was a key part of Lochee.”

Catering assistant Sheila Flynn, 49, added: “My mum went there and always spoke really highly of it.”

Greig Haining has run nearby Frankie Davie’s Ice Cream Cafe for 16 years. He said: “I miss the children and the parents and grandparents nipping in after dropping the kids off.”

Retired spinner Robert Mill, 67, said: “My children are now 42 and 36. I remember them going to St Mary’s and they were really happy there.

“Memories come flooding back when I drive past it as I remember them playing outside when I picked them up.”

Former pupil James Phillips, 55, a decontamination specialist, attended the school between 1966 and 1968.

He said: “I was quite upset to see the old building coming down.”

The nursery and annexe building was deemed surplus in 2011.
