A STOBSWELL festival has been organised in a bid to showcase the best the area has to offer.
Community groups in the area have revealed work is under way on bringing a 10-day event to the city.
The event, which has been dubbed Stobsfest, has been planned to take place in Albert Street from May 10.
Talks between groups, led by the Stobswell Forum, have already started and events such as a local history tour and a performance from a local theatre group have been pencilled in for the proceedings.
The main ambition is to show off the best the area has to offer, from the local traders to the numerous groups that offer up their services to the community.
David MacDougal, of the forum, said there was a focus to involve all of Albert Street’s public buildings, groups and businesses to show off what the area has to offer.
He added: “This festival has been inspired by the likes of WestFest and we would like it to eventually become recognised city-wide.
“There are plans for events to take place throughout the 10 days with everything revolving around May 14, which is to be the biggest of the festival’s 10 days.
“The focus will be Albert Street but we would like to utilise local schools, church buildings and Boomerang’s new centre.”
Duncan McCabe, of the Stobswell Forum, added: “There are a lot more events we are looking to organise.
“So far we have a local theatre group kicking things off on May 10 and we have a local history tour, lead by archivist Iain Flett, in place.
“We want to show the rest of Dundee the number of public buildings that can be used to set up events, the number of groups people can get involved with and the amount of great local traders we have to offer.
“It’s all about community cohesion.”
Wendy Sturrock, the owner of boutique store Room 39, who is opening a salon next door in March, said: “The festival will be great for local businesses in the area.
“It will bring more passing trade to shops in Stobswell and, more importantly, help to bring a positive image back to Stobswell.
“I am hoping this festival will put Stobswell back on the map.”
