Drugs worth £227,000 have been seized in the Dundee area as part of a major police operation.

A leading city police inspector has welcomed the latest figures claiming that Operation Slate was “progressing well”.

Chief Inspector David McIntosh said the success so far demonstrated that police were responding to public concerns about the supply of drugs in the area.

He said: “Operation Slate continues to progress well in a number of avenues.

“Police locally are continuing to take pro-active measures to tackle the issues surrounding the possession and supply of drugs.

“We can reassure the public we are listening to their concerns and are dealing with individuals involved in the supply of drugs and the associated crime.”

His comments come hard on the heels of the latest arrest in the city, where £9,000 worth of heroin and cannabis was allegedly seized this week.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said a 42-year-old man had been charged in connection with drugs offences.

She added: “Following an intelligence-led initiative, under Operation Slate, Police Scotland can confirm that a 42-year-old man has been charged in connection with drugs offences after the recovery of class A and class B drugs from an address in Balmoral Gardens, Dundee on Wednesday.

“Heroin and cannabis with a total estimated illicit value of almost £9,000 was recovered and in addition £9,500 in cash has been seized.”

This latest arrest follows the alleged seizure of £130,000 worth of heroin in Dundee last week.

Officers were said to have recovered the drugs when they swooped in the Kingsway West and the Kingsway East in what they described as an “intelligence-led operation.”

Three men were arrested and charged.

The latest drug seizures come on top of the recovery of £88,000 worth of drugs leading to 26 arrests for a variety of crimes under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

A recent police report to Dundee City Council’s policy and resources committee said of Operation Slate: “In the coming weeks and months such operations will continue to target those individuals who seek to profit from serious and organised crime.”
