POLICE have launched a probe after several vehicles were spray-painted with a slogan of what is thought to be a Dundee gang.
Residents living in St Mary’s Drumlithie Place believe about five or six white and grey vehicles parked on the street were vandalised.
An owner of one of the vehicles targeted said the letters “YMB” were sprayed on light-coloured cars and it is thought that the acronym could be an abbreviation for “Young Mary Boys”.
The woman, who declined to be named for fear of retribution, said: “It was sprayed in red paint along with several other cars in the street.
“Thankfully, it all washed off but it took my husband two-and-a-half hours to get it off.
“It seems they targeted lighter coloured cars and they sprayed ‘YMB’ on them, which I think stands for ‘Young Mary Boys’.
“We don’t know when exactly it was done but it must have happened on Sunday night and I think about six cars in total were targeted.”
Social care worker Gail McHugh, 48, had her Chrysler Ypsilon spray-painted, too.
She said: “I just had squiggles painted on my car as I think they just ran out of paint when they got to it.
“The worst affected was the van owned by one of my neighbours and I think he had to use T-Cut to get it off but I got mine taken off using petrol.
“Apparently, the police have looked at CCTV from the school across the road but I don’t know if they’ve seen anything.”
Neighbour Norma Murphy, 82, said the incident was just one of many recent spates of vandalism in the normally quiet area.
She said: “I saw the police were here on Monday. I think it was a policewoman and a policeman up with a big van.
“I don’t see any point in what they have done because I just can’t imagine what the thrill is in spray-painting cars.
“I don’t think it will be kids that have done it because it happened late at night, so I think it may be people in their 20s.
“There’s been a lot of bus shelters in the area that have been smashed as well and I think this vandalism will all be linked.”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that we are making inquiries after several cars were vandalised overnight between Sunday March 20 and Monday March 21 in Drumlithie Place, Dundee. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tayside Division on 101.”
