High winds gusted through Dundee today, with gales of more than 70mph recorded on the Tay Road Bridge.

A yellow warning for wind was issued by the Met Office, as blustery conditions continued through the day.

Alan Hutchison, Tay Road Bridge manager, said a gust of 74.9mph was recorded on the bridge at one point today.

He said that conditions would continue to be assessed throughout the day.

Bridge restrictions were in place for much of last night and this morning — with a ‘cars only’ rule in force at times throughout the early hours. At present the bridge is only open to cars and a 30mph speed limit is in place. The central walkway is also closed.

A spokesman for the Met Office said the yellow warning was due to be lifted in the afternoon — after the worst conditions in Dundee, which occurred around 9am, would be over.

He said: “Conditions were definitely into the gale forces. The worst of it was across the road bridge and down the Tay.”

Tomorrow the forecast for Dundee looks to be clearer than anywhere elsewhere in Scotland — with the city expected to be drier than most other places around the country.

And the weekend is expected to be a pleasant one — despite being slightly more chilly.

Temperatures will drop to around 13C and 14C across Saturday and Sunday.

Recently, Dundee has been experiencing average temperatures between 16C and 17C.

The spokesman for the Met Office added that there will be a noticeable change over the coming days.

He said: “There will be a marked difference in how cold the air feels as a vigorous area of low pressure starts to move in.

“People will start to notice the difference on Friday and that should continue through to Sunday.

“But it will be quite bright throughout the day with showers only expected in the early hours of the morning.

“The following week the temperatures are forecasted to increase back to levels the Tayside region has been experiencing in the last few weeks.

“It’s definitely not going to be a return to summer conditions but it is expected to be warmer.”

Previously, it was revealed that Dundee experienced one of the wettest summers on record with rain falling throughout.
