The councillor in charge of city development in Dundee has admitted it is “unfortunate” that locals are being subject to a series of major roadworks at the same time.
Bear Scotland has announced that parts of Kingsway East will be subject to closures as it carries out resurfacing work from the end of this month.
It coincides with work that’s already due to take place in November on several streets in the Hilltown area, as Scottish Water renews underground mains, with Kings Cross Road and Graham Street also subject to work in the coming weeks.
And it follows a number of roadworks that have taken place on busy routes in the West End and at Lochee Road in recent months.
Councillor Will Dawson, city development convener, urged drivers to show patience during this latest spate of work.
He said: “I know there are varying works all over the city at the minute, from the gas, electricity and water networks. It is just unfortunate that on this occasion some of these works need to be done and they need to plan them in as best they can.
“There is going to be a bit of an impact. Bear Scotland normally speak to the council to try to make us aware of what is going on, and we try to advise them of what we have planned.
“I hope they have taken any advice given to them from the council officers and put it in as necessary.
“It always one of these instances, whether it’s Bear Scotland or Dundee City Council, where we are damned if we do and we are damned if we don’t.”
Bear Scotland will be investing £435,000 for work on the Kingsway’s eastbound carriageway, from Forfar Road to the Pitkerro Roundabout, and a section from Longtown Road to Milton of Craigie Roundabout, lasting four weeks from October 31. The area sees more than 12,000 vehicles pass through it every day.
Mr Dawson added: “When the Dundee road network is opened fully it operates pretty well.
“However, it can just take one road to have an impact on the rest of the city.
“I would advise people to have a bit of patience and plan ahead. These works generally do need done — it’s not as if they are doing works for the sake of doing them.
“It is a bit of necessary evil but it is important to add some of the infrastructure.
“In order for companies to secure supply, they need to carry out these necessary improvements.”
The Kingsway work will see some lane closures and overnight closures throughout the four-week period.
