Dundee saw the first snowfall of winter – but it was all too much for one gritter.

The Tayside Contracts vehicle caused disruption on the northbound carriageway on the A90 about half a mile north of Dundee.

The inside lane was closed off by police officers just after 11am while the vehicle was being recovered.

Over an hour later, work was still being done to repair the gritter.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “There is a broken down gritter on the inside lane near to Powrie Brae.

“It is obstructing one lane northbound on the A90.

“Recovery of the vehicle is underway.”

Richard Cranney, depute director of Tayside Contracts said the fault was down to a broken spring.

He said: “The vehicle is currently being recovered. I believe there was a broken spring in the vehicle and we didn’t want to risk any more damage.

“There are a few routes being serviced by gritters just now and this breakdown shouldn’t disrupt anything too much.”

The area saw a few flutters of snow this morning but nothing significant enough to lie.

But the snow is not set to last with a dry day forecast for tomorrow.

Emma Sharpels from the Met Office said: “The snow fall is just for today only and it’s not likely to lie on lower ground – those 400m above sea level could see it settling.

“This cold spell is coming on the back of Storm Abigail as it moves off towards Scandinavia.

“The wintry showers should begin to fade as we move onto this evening.

“Tomorrow will start off a much dryer and milder day with air coming over from the Atlantic.

“Unfortunately, as we move into Sunday it will turn wet again and it will begin to feel a lot more normal for this time of year.”
