Michelin is set to invest in Dundee following the announcement the tyre giant is to close its factory in Northern Ireland.

The French company will increase production at their Baldovie Road site by 30% by 2020 with an investment of around £50m (62m€).

The Stoke factory will also see an increase in investment. Between the Dundee and Stoke sites 100 new jobs will be created.

However the news comes as a blow to those at Ballymena.

The plant closure will see the loss of 860 jobs.

The company said it will “run down” the tyre manufacturing plant by mid-2018 as part of a restructuring plan.

Earlier in the year, the Tele revealed that Michelin planned to extend their Dundee site by over 20,000 square metres. A new warehouse will be built to store the extra tyres that will be produced.

At the time, manager of the factory, John Reid, “We’re confident jobs will be created if development goes ahead, but that depends on us receiving planning permission and securing funding.

“We are constantly looking at ways of improving our competitiveness, which highlights our commitment to the area.”

Michelin is one of Dundee’s biggest manufacturing employers, with a workforce of 855.
